HARTFORD – State Representative Laura Devlin (R – Fairfield and Trumbull) has been named the Motor Transport Association of Connecticut (MTAC) State Representative of the Year, MTAC announced today. The State Representative of the Year award is an annual award presented to a member of the State House of Representatives who supports public policy which allows the trucking industry to remain competitive in Connecticut.

“As Ranking Member of the legislature’s Transportation Committee, Representative Devlin has been a champion for the trucking industry in Connecticut,” said MTAC President Joe Sculley. “When truck-only tolls were being pitched as a means to generate revenue to make up for fiscally irresponsible decisions, she fought for us.”

“Representative Devlin is keenly aware of the fact that everything we buy comes on a truck, and that public policy for commercial trucking ultimately impacts the broader economy,” Sculley stated.

“I am truly humbled that MTAC has chosen to honor me with this award,” Rep. Devlin said. “Trucking is an essential force for our entire economy. We depend on trucking for groceries, medical supplies, retail and construction goods, and so much more. Even goods that come from rail or water need to be loaded on trucks for further delivery. Any legislation we pass that specifically targets this industry and increases costs will be reflected in these goods, further increasing the cost to live here; it will impact us all.  I will always support trucking in this state, especially as the prospect of highway tolling will likely, and unfortunately, continue to persist.”

Sculley concluded by highlighting the importance of the trucking industry. “More than 85 percent of Connecticut communities depend exclusively on trucks to move their goods. Trucks transport 98 percent of total manufactured tonnage in the state. The average 18-wheel tractor trailer pays nearly $18,000 annually in state and federal road taxes,” he stated. “The trucking industry plays a crucial role in the Connecticut economy, and it pays a lot of taxes in order to do that.”

“Representative Devlin is a leader, and we look forward to working with her for years to come,” Sculley concluded.
